Amazon.com Product Description
Metro 2033 is a single player first-person shooter (FPS) that incorporates role-playing game (RPG) elements. Based on the best selling novel of the same name by Dmitry A. Glukhovsky, it tells the story of humanity's struggle for survival in the forgotten tunnels of Moscow's underground subway system following a devastating nuclear war. Features include mission play combining a unique mix of firearm and melee combat, an economy revolving around ammo and items and an experience system which takes each of your actions into account, leading to a variety of possible alternate endings and extended replay value. Story The apocalypse came by our own making, with a single blinding flash, followed by a firestorm of sheer flame. It took just an hour and a half to wipe out 3.5 billion people and 10,000 years of civilization, plunging humanity into a hopeless Dark Age. In the aftermath, survivors in Moscow moved underground and slowly organized into small socially and politically independent tribes, clustered around the city's deep, subway stations. The young man, Artyom is among them. A member of the first generation of children raised in the subterranean world following the apocalypse, he has only the vaguest recollections of life above ground, and contact with other humans beyond those that inhabit his local station, "Exhibition," but he will have to face new experiences with both if humanity is to survive. Mutated beasts known as "Dark Ones" are spreading throughout the isolated stations of the Metro, and Artyom has been chosen as the messenger to spread the news of the new peril. Become humanity’s last savior and uncover the truth behind the horrors that await in Moscow’s underground. View larger. | Gameplay Metro 2033 is a single player, FPS that also incorporates RPG elements. Action played out in the role of young Artyom, is mission-based and because the game is based on the Glukhovsky novel, the storyline veers away from the anti-Russian stance that is often seen in post-apocalyptic stories and video games. Here the Russian characters are humanity, and fight every day against the terrors that nuclear war has wrought. These terrors come mostly in the form of mutants known as "Homo Novus," who have invaded the Underground, as well as frightening alien-like paranormal creatures that haunt the gameworld. The game hero, Artyom, has a certain immunity to the latter and a talent for dispatching the former, which together make him a very popular choice to be sent on missions. Combat throughout utilizes a mixture of improvised firearms and melee weapons. Balancing the use of these two is important because in this world of violence and scarcity, ammunition plays the duel role of protection and commodity. Throughout the game players will use ammo as much to purchase items and upgrades at different stations visited, as they will use it in combat. In addition, the choices made by players throughout the game register as "Enlightenment Points," or the lack of them. Accumulated totals of these register as a variety of constructs such as curiosity, kindness and prejudice resistance that can and will lead to alternative story endings. Together with its unique inventory management system, engrossing storyline and replay value based on morality, Metro 2033 is sure to be a game not to be missed by FPS and RPG players alike. Hidden jewel! April 20, 2010 B. Kester (Tulsa, OK) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
As a person who enjoys Russian culture and the Russian language, I consider myself reasonably well-informed in entertainment coming from there, but somehow this game slipped through and I didn't find out about it until release day. I really didn't know what to expect, but was extremely surprised! What a great gaming experience!
The graphics are nice, the face-acting is good, and I love love the fact they support so many spoken languages! It seems like no gaming companies do this. I was able to turn on Russian voice-acting and use the English subtitles, (very enjoyable to me)!
The story was interesting and I kept wondering what the lead character was going to do next and where he was going to go. I found the environment very enjoyable too. Great depiction of a post-apocalyptic world! Not to mention some of the creatures and entities encountered were very cool.
Sometimes I got frustrated because I'd forget to buy ammo when I got to a town and would run out... but that was my own fault. The linear game play offered enough choices to make it interesting.
The overall experience was a little short, but I enjoyed this game so much I played through two more times before finally having enough.
Great Game April 9, 2010 Blake Willett (San Bruno, California, USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Loved this game, still made me jump on the second time through even when playing easy. Achievements are doable and fun, have a couple things to figure out and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes this genre of game.
Very scary, very good April 18, 2010 Jhon Villalobos (Maracaibo, Venezuela) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Metro 2033, excellent game. It is a FPS game style.
Based on a novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky named Metro 2033, have a great history.
I love post apocalyptic histories.
The only bad thing on this game is that don't have a multiplayer.
Very Underrated! June 19, 2010 Aaron Dusenberry 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I almost didn't purchase this game based on the reviews I read here even though I had been looking forward to it's release since the first screenshots. When the price went down 10.00 i figured why not? I wasn't disapointed and really have no idea what these people are wining about. No it is not Fallout 3 and it is not meant to be. The way I see it it is a sort of mix between the Fear FPS games, Resident Evil and Bioshock, three of my favorite series. The atmosphere is dark and bleak, but for some reason I did not find it depressing, just atmospheric in the way Bioshock was atmospheric. This is a world hanging on the brink and the developers really captured that feeling well.
Honestly I'm glad you don't have to interact with every NPC and go on fetch quests. This game is about surviving in extreme conditions and being smart with the way you use ammo and fight the enemies. The graphics are really top notch, some of the best FPS graphics I have seen thus far on 360 and right up there with Modern Warfare etc. Granted it's completely different as you are underground most of the time, but I really dug the graphical style as well as the sound. If you have 5.1 you are in for a treat, as this is one of the better uses of 5.1 I have seen on the 360, sort of like Dead Space. So all in all a great purchase and the campaign lasted me around 14 hours the first time through on normal. I will def be going back to try it again on hard, which is a sign I won't be selling this to EB anytime soon. So give it a chance if you like the genre, there really isn't anything else on the horizon and it will tide you over until some of the other big releases hit.
Best of 2010 so far! March 22, 2010 Jon 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've played a good amount of games this year and none are better than Metro 2033. I've already beaten the game and was surprised.
The story is amazing, it is mostly scripted with little free roam time (in the stations) but that's how it is supposed to be. Please note, it was advertised as an RPG-light story, you can upgrade armor and weapons. The story is filled with scripted events but, these are very well made and move the story along with an epic feeling. I won't speak on too much of the story to avoid spoilers, but you basically have to travel from your home station to, Exhibition, to Polis to spread news about the dark ones. You'll run into a variety of enemies and different characters that will help you in your journey.
The graphics are also amazing. The atmosphere they aimed for is captured perfectly as a dark, post-apocalyptic world. The details are great underground and on the surface. Some pop-up textures occur but other than that, the game is on the same level as other recent releases.
The combat is somewhat broken, at first. But, it soon gets better as you realize this isn't a run-and-gun game. You have to shot in bursts and aim properly. There are a lot of weapons with upgrades like scopes, silencers and you can even add a stock to your revolver. Very well done. There is stealth in this game, it works well with a indicator on your risk telling you how illuminated you are, green is hidden, red is visible.
I would also like to mention, even when playing on Normal, I found this game challenging, at some points I even considered switching to easy. Save your ammo!
Overall, this game is incredible. One of my favorite games since the original Bioshock. Highly recommended.
