Dante’s Inferno is an epic single player, third-person action adventure game inspired by "Inferno", part one of Dante Alighieri’s classic Italian poem, "The Divine Comedy." Featuring nonstop action rendered at 60 frames-per-second, signature and upgradable weapons, attack combos and mana-fueled spells and the choice of punishing or absolving the souls of defeated enemies, it is a classic Medieval tale of the eternal conflict with sin and the resulting horrors of hell, adapted for a new generation and a new medium.

Story
The Italian mercenary Dante returns home from the bloodletting that was the Third Crusade to two pieces of soul-crushing news. The first is that although he was assured that he was absolved of mortal sins committed in the form of wartime atrocities in the name of the churches interests in the Holy Land, that is not actually the case and his immortal soul is in grave peril. The second and more terrible is that his beloved Beatrice has been murdered, and her soul pulled down into hell by a dark force. Vowing not to accept the damnation of either souls, he gives chase, vows to get Beatrice back and descends into the infamous nine circles of hell. For weapons, he wields Death's soul-reaping scythe, and commands holy powers of the cross, given to him by Beatrice.

Scythe Combat
To vanquish the foes you encounter on your journey through the hell of Dante's Inferno, you must learn to wield Death's Scythe with precision and deadly force. Mix light attacks with heavy attacks to create combos, then incorporate jumps and grabs to add another layer to your combat. With dodging and Holy Cross moves thrown into the mix, you can truly become a force to be reckoned with. Without using all of your combative skills and techniques, there is no hope of ever reaching Beatrice.

Holy Powers
During your journey, you may collect magic abilities for use against the legions of hell. When you perform the Righteous Path power you make a dash attack and leave a trail of icy shards in your wake. With Martyrdom you sacrifice health and mana to deal a heavy amount of damage to surrounding enemies. Divine Armor regenerates your health and protects you from damage. Add these and other powers to your arsenal to vanquish all who stand in your way and when you need to replenish your mana-fueled abilities, visit the Holy Fountains scattered throughout the gameplay area.

Creature Taming
As powerful as weapons and magic are, sometimes surviving the perils of hell requires brute force. With the power of Death's Scythe, you are able to mount the beasts of hell and use them against your enemies. All of this, however, requires ridding the beast of its current rider first. If successful, you will become the beast’s new master. Now use its awesome power to pulverize enemies and complete tasks that require a beast's strength.

I just finished fighting a 30 story Cleopatra whose nipples were mouths that spawn unbaptized babies who had blades for arms. Enough said, 5 stars.

There are enemies who shoot male genitalia as a weapon. That's all you really need to know about this game. Indeed, everyone hates this game, bookworms who feel that poetry is sacred, and gamers who feel this is a straight-up God Of War clone. Disregard them. Are you eighteen? Do you have a 360? Is it working? If you answered yes to all, then drop all your things and buy this game. Hear me out-BUY THIS GAME!

This game is awesome. I really don't understand why similar gameplay elements prompt a reviewer to knock a game down a couple notches. Dark Stalkers and Mortal Kombat played a hell of a lot like Street Fighter II.... did that keep them from being awesome games? Nope. Let's face it... God of War solidified a genre. So you press the same button to open a door... or use green fountains for health. Who cares? The characters, story and environments are all completely different. And the gameplay is an improved version of God of War's. Sounds like all the right components for a great game to me. It's a trip to hell... and it's Dante's vision of hell. As a big fan of the book I will also say that it's ridiculous that people are upset the game takes creative license with the original work. So what? The original poem unaltered wouldn't make a good game.... it's a poem. They had to stray a little from the source material to make this a great video game... and I for one think the developers vision of Dante's Inferno is an amazingly creative and interesting venture.

I bought this game for my husband's 17th wedding anniversary present. He loves it! The graphics are extremely real and he loves the challenge. It was well worth the money.

Dante's Inferno: like the book, this game is a journey through hell. Unlike the book, the game is going to make teenagers reexamine their moral choices while having fun.

It's a good video game? Definitely. I've battled demons, defeated unbatized babies with knifes for hands, and beautify women trying to stab me with their large member between their legs. At some points, the mental challenges follow the same formula of pull a level, see what that does, and respawn to seek what the next level does. On the whole, the game mechanics are excellent.

It's a responsible video game? Absolutely. The story is neither pro- or anti-Christian. Dante discovers early on that his part in the Crusades earns him damnation rather than salvation. So far so good. Never are controverial sins featured, so Dante's hell is not going to turn off liberals or conservatives. The game has however made me consider my own transgretions. I further more would like to point out the level of Hell most parents would feel uncomfortable with, Lust, is so us-sexy that making teenagers play this game would likely increase the number taking abstinence pledges (when nipples have tongues and spit out dead babies, sex would be unappealing to you to).

EA deserves credit for making me pick up the book. The game is both fun and deep in a way that completements the book.
